CHRISTIANSBURG – A man was killed Sunday by police responding to a domestic call after pointing a gun at the responding officers.
According to the Town of Christiansburg, “Christiansburg Police received a dispatch call to the 300 block of Miller St. SE for a domestic dispute” on Sunday, April 12 at approximately 7:39 p.m.
“Upon arrival, officers attempted to contact the suspect who was inside a residence,” the town’s statement reads. “The suspect produced a handgun, causing the officers to back away, secure a perimeter, and attempt negotiations. The suspect then walked outside with the gun and officers attempted to negotiate and de-escalate before the suspect returned inside. The suspect exited the residence a second time in possession of a gun and advanced toward officers.”
“Officers used less lethal ‘beanbag’ rounds in an attempt to take the suspect into custody without using lethal force,” it continues. “The suspect drew his gun and was shot by officers. First aid was administered but the suspect died on scene.”
The Virginia State Police is investigating. The Christiansburg Police Department was assisted by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and Christiansburg EMS.
