Lee Wolfle of Blacksburg, died on April 15, 2018, at the age of 76. Lee was born on June 24, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois, the second child of Dael and Helen Wolfle. He grew up in Washington DC, earned his B.S. from the University of Colorado, a master’s degree from San Jose State, and his PhD from Michigan.


He taught sociology at Radford College and the University of New Mexico before coming to the Department of Educational Research and Statistics, in the College of Education at Virginia Tech in 1976.

He taught at Virginia Tech for 25 years in the areas of research methodology and statistics with an emphasis on structural equation modeling. He was one of several scholars nationwide who were instrumental in introducing structural equation modeling to educational research techniques and earned multiple honors throughout his teaching career.

Lee was preceded in death by his son David. He is survived by his son, James and wife Stephanie, his daughter Susan Stoker and husband Pat, his brother, John and wife Joan, his sister, Jan and husband Bill, and grandchildren Abigail, Matthew, Jacob, and Noah.

A memorial will be held at McCoy Funeral home in Blacksburg at 2p.m. on May 8. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention at https://afsp.donordrive.com/campaign/LeeWolfle, in honor of his son David who lost his life in 1986.
