Virginia Tech’s Emma Lemley and Cori McMillan were both drafted to the Athletes Unlimited Softball League’s inaugural season.

With back-to-back first round picks, Emma Lemley was selected third overall by the Blaze. Cori McMillan was selected fourth overall by the Bandits.

Tech was the only school with two picks in the first round.

Lemley, the active Division I career leader with 822 strikeouts, will end her collegiate career as one of the best pitchers in program history. With a career 2.91 ERA, Lemley is one of six pitchers in program history to tally 65 or more wins. She has held opponents to just a .208 average over her four seasons.

This season, Lemley is 16-6 with a 2.75 ERA over 140.0 innings pitched. Her four no-hitters is tied for the most thrown by a Division I player this season. She leads the ACC with her 169 strikeouts on the season.

Lemley is a three-time All-ACC selection and a nine-time ACC Pitcher of the Week honoree.

McMillan leads the nation with her single-season program record 27 home runs. The senior, who leads the Hokies with her .450 batting average, is currently slugging 1.060. She leads the Hokies in hits (67), RBIs (57) and on base percentage (.557).

The Radford transfer has amassed 65 career home runs – with 48 of them coming as a Hokie. Her 48 home runs ranks third on Virginia Tech’s all-time home run record list. She also broke the single-season slugging percentage record last season, finishing the year at .869.

McMillan Top 25 Finalist

Virginia Tech’s Cori McMillan was named a USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Top 25 Finalist on Wednesday afternoon.

The nation’s home run leader has been explosive at the plate all season. She leads the country with 25 home runs and 0.53 home runs per game. McMillan also leads the team and the ACC with her 1.035 slug percentage.

Currently batting .441 on the year, McMillan leads the Hokies in hits (63), home runs (25), RBIs (54), slugging percentage (1.035) and on base percentage (.551). Her 25 home runs are a new single-season program record as she broke her own single-season record of 21 home runs last season.

The senior, who currently bats leadoff, has hit nine of her 25 home runs in the first at-bat of the game. No stranger to the big moments either, McMillan hit the walk-off home run in Tech’s 6-5 win over No. 16 Stanford.

The Hokies have had a Top 25 finalist for the second straight year as Emma Ritter was a finalist in 2024.

Mental health awareness

Virginia Tech Athletics’ Sport Psychology department, in partnership with the Virginia Tech Hokie Club, is excited to relaunch its annual Mental Health Awareness Month fundraising initiative. The campaign begins Thursday and will run through the entire month of May.

This fundraising effort aims to provide additional financial support for Counseling and Athletic Mental Performance (CAMP), helping to enhance mental health services available to all Virginia Tech student-athletes.

“We’ve made great progress in promoting better mental health for our student-athletes, thanks to the incredible generosity of Hokie Nation,” said Dr. Gary Bennett, Senior Associate Athletic Director and head of CAMP. “These funds are vital in helping us continue to provide the best possible care for over 600 student-athletes in Blacksburg.”

Supporters can contribute to this mission by donating to the Sport Psychology department. Gifts will directly benefit CAMP’s ongoing mental health initiatives. In addition to one-on-one support, CAMP also organizes annual suicide prevention workshops and delivers team-based mental health programming throughout the year.
