RADFORD – The “Atlanta Five” has made their annual gift to Radford Fairlawn Daily Bread, giving the gift of food for the holiday season.

This group of friends and former co-workers at New River Community College bonded due to their love for the Atlanta Braves more than 20 years ago. Each year, they donate money to a charity instead of exchanging Christmas gifts and for the past several years have donated to RFDB, for which one of the group members, Peggy Taylor, serves as a member of the board of directors.

“The “A5” continue to love and support our mission…and I love them for it,” said Taylor.

The A5 donated $600 to RFDB this year, helping the organization continue its mission of providing a hot lunchtime meal to hundreds of people each week Monday through Friday, which it has been doing for 30 years. Today, the group includes four of the original members, including Jutta Green (business professor), Ray Wurzburger (accounting professor), Wes Adcock (chemistry professor), and Taylor (retired Director of Student Services). Chris Pugh, who worked at New River initially and then went to Ruritan National where she still works part-time, joined the group around 2005.  The group lost math professor Tom Flohr to a brain tumor in 2005.

“We would love to encourage others to donate because we believe so strongly in their mission and service to our community, and we know how much these donations mean,” said Taylor. In a 2022 interview. “We also think Christmas is the perfect time to share our gifts with those in need.”
