Florida woman dies after crash on I-81 in Montgomery County

MONTGOMERY, CO. – A 72-year-old Florida woman has died after being hit by a tractor trailer Friday, Dec. 15 on I-81 in Montgomery County near Radford.

“Virginia State Police is investigating a three-vehicle crash which resulted in a fatality,” according to the Virginia State Police. “The crash occurred Friday, (Dec 15), at 1:40 a.m. on the southbound side of Interstate 81, at the 108-mile marker in Montgomery County.”

According to the VSP, “a 2022 Hyundai SUV was traveling south at the 108-mile marker, when the vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway and struck the guardrail. The SUV came to rest in the right travel lane. The driver of the SUV exited the vehicle and was struck by a 2023 Peterbilt tractor trailer which was also traveling south.  The tractor trailer then struck a 2008 Dodge Caravan on the right shoulder.”

The driver of the Hyundai was identified as Pamela Ann Crockett, 72, of Hawthorne, Fla. Crockett died at the scene. The Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team assisted with the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
