NRV Project Linus will hold an in-person Blanket Day event Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026, at Grove United Methodist Church, 1020 Tyler Ave., Radford, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
“We will have some fabric and supplies available for use at Blanket Day,” organizers announced. “You are welcome to bring your own fleece, crochet, knitting or sewing projects and work on your Project Linus blankets during the event.”
Donations are always accepted – fleece, yarn, cotton or flannel fabrics, batting, thread, etc. Fleece is required to be 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 yard length pieces of child-friendly prints of fleece – no solid colors.
The plush style of fleece is not recommended, as that sheds badly when it is cut. The chapter accepts single-layer fleece blankets using the pattern found at https://nrvprojectlinus.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Fleece-Blanket-Directions.pdf. The pull-through fringing method is preferred rather than knotted fringe.
Anyone who plans to drop off blankets at Blanket Day, please be sure each one is labeled with your name and address (address labels are best for this).
The annual Knit and Crochet Along fundraiser will kick off in September. We will send a future announcement when registration opens. If this is something that you would enjoy participating in, then please list NRV-Radford chapter and Penny Sweet on your registration and our chapter will receive the full registration fee.
We are excited to announce that Schoolhouse Fabric in Floyd, Va. is now a collection site for Project Linus blankets! We will soon have a drop box at that location. We greatly appreciate the wonderful people at Schoolhouse Fabric for partnering with us!
A flyer is attached for Blanket Day. Please print and post to help spread the word. Share with your friends, family, social groups, or anyone who you think would enjoy being involved with Project Linus.
Activities at Blanket Day include: dropping off completed blankets, making new blankets (some fabric provided and you are welcome to bring your own), sewing tags on completed blankets and working on your own blanket that you’ve already started for Project Linus. A light lunch will be available.
NRV-Radford Project Linus accepts new handmade quilts, blankets, crochet and knit afghans. No wool yarn allowed. Fleece blankets must be single-layer without knots.
Project Linus blankets are distributed to a variety of locations in the New River Valley. Sheriff’s departments and local police departments carry blankets with them to provide comfort to children in crisis situations. Fire departments have blankets to distribute in times of need. Social services departments distribute blankets to children who have to be relocated on an emergency basis. Local hospitals distribute blankets to children who have received outpatient surgical departments. Blankets are given to children who have parents deployed in the line of duty. Project Linus also contributes to national disasters, such as hurricanes, fires and other emergency situations when many children are affected.
In addition to responding to emergency situations, Project Linus also makes weighted blankets (upon request) for children in need.
