FAIRLAWN – A Blacksburg man was killed early Sunday morning after being shot while leaving a party in Fairlawn, according to Pulaski County Sheriff Mike Worrell.

Worrell released a statement Monday seeking witnesses to the events surrounding the shooting.

“On Sunday morning at approximately 1 a.m. the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 7000 block of Overlook Lane located in the Fairlawn section of Pulaski County in reference to a gunshot wound victim,” Worrell said. “Upon arrival, deputies found a male subject later identified as 24-year-old Matthew Cameron Carper, of Blacksburg, with a gunshot wound sitting inside a vehicle.”

Medical attention was provided to Carper at the scene and he was flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he later died as a result of the gunshot wound.

“In speaking with witnesses at the scene, a large gathering was taking place at the Overlook Lane residence when a fight broke out between multiple subjects,” Worrell’s statement continued. “Shortly after, witnesses described hearing a gunshot and multiple individuals began running and leaving the location.”

The sheriff’s department is asking anyone who was at the Overlook Lane address during the gathering, or anyone who has information regarding the events to please contact the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office at 540-980-7800 or contact the anonymous tip line at 540-980-7810.
