Two Christiansburg restaurants are closing their doors and placing for sale signs in their yards.
Both Poppy’s and Gigi Cupcakes will close in the near future, but both could stay open if new owners step up to the plate.
Poppy’s will be four years old on July 30. In a social media post, the owners of Poppy’s said:
“We’ve always had a five-year plan. We picked the hours, we opened when we wanted to, we close when we want to. Our hours were so we would still have time with our families and friends. We hope Poppy’s will continue in new hands that will take it further and make it even bigger and better.”
Poppy’s is a family-owned restaurant and ice cream shop, located at 317 Depot St., operated by brothers, Terry and Jeremy Williams. It was founded as a nostalgic homage to their father, and a remembrance to the once-opened Custard Corner in the community.
For decades, the Custard Corner became famous for its hot dogs and ice cream.
The brothers opened Poppy’s and shaped its menu to mirror the CC. They even brought back classic staples like the “Red Dogs” and recruited the grandchildren of the original CC owners to work at the shop.
The Williams family now plans to transition into retirement. They plan to keep the site fully operational until a new owner might take over the business.
Meanwhile the owners of cupcake store said the following: “We have made the difficult decision that Gigi’s will close its doors on Aug. 31.”
The gourmet bakery chain is located at 210 Laurel St., next to Lowe’s and Grand Home Furnishings, and had transitioned from just cupcakes and a food truck to a café called “The Emerald Table.”
The local business frequently participated in local events like farmer’s markets, weddings, birthdays and Sinkland Farm festivals.
In recent years, the local owners have faced mounting economic pressures, rising costs and franchise challenges. They adapted by expanding their menu to include boba teas, milkshakes and specialized dietary items.
Gigi’s Cupcakes is a well-known cupcake brand that began in 2008 in Nashville, Tennessee. The brand’s success led to rapid expansion across the United States, with over 100 locations at its peak.
