RADFORD – Grace Episcopal Church in Radford recently made a donation to Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread (RFDB) to support the organization’s mission of food and fellowship.
Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread serves a homemade lunchtime meal to anyone who wants it, five days a week at its dining room on Second Street, as well as delivering Meals on Wheels to recipients in the City of Radford and the Fairlawn community. Grace Episcopal recently donated $1,500 to RFDB, primarily from proceeds of its Pancake Supper held in February for Shrove Tuesday.
RFDB Executive Director Karen Jones said donations like Grace’s are essential to keeping RFDB fulfilling its mission.
“The support of our faith communities is monumental,” she said. “Financial contributions make it possible for us to provide high-quality home cooked meals each day.”
RFDB Board of Directors Co-Chair John Cox agrees.
“These is no doubt that there is food insecurity in the Radford/Fairlawn area,” he said. “The lunches that we provide five days a week make a real dent in that insecurity, but the need is ongoing. We need donations to continue to do our best to meet the needs well into the future.”
“Without RFDB, there would be more hunger in our community,” Cox continued. “As more of the burden of dealing with hunger is shifted to local communities, the need continues to grow. I recently retired as CEO of the Radford University Foundation after 15 years. I am pleased to be able to continue to serve the community through my involvement with the Radford Fairlawn Daily Bread. Our mission is vital. The need is real.”
Jones said that mission includes more than just providing food.
“Being a welcoming space is an essential part of our mission,” she said. “Because of that, we are able to provide not just a meal, but friendship, compassion and be a trusted part of the community.”
