Winfred Earl Barton, born on May 4, 1938, in Radford, passed away peacefully Mar. 14, 2025, at WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh, N.C., at the age of 86.
A devoted father, amazing grandfather, a man of deep faith, and a brilliant mind, Wint lived a life defined by love, service, and creativity. He had a heart that cared for those around him, always ready with wisdom, kindness, and a helping hand. His passion for writing shone through in his poetry and deep reflections, leaving behind words that will continue to inspire.
Wint graduated from Radford High School in 1956 and then proudly served in the United States Air Force, a chapter of his life that reflected his dedication to duty and honor from 1956 to 1962.
Beyond his service, he found joy in the simple and meaningful—cooking meals, telling funny jokes, helping those in need, collecting unique artifacts, and donning his signature plaid and Hawaiian shirts. He worked at Virginia Tech from 1976 to 2009.
He was preceded in death by his father, Winfred Elijah Barton, mother Katherine Lorraine Vanhoy Barton, and brother Jimmy Joe Barton. He is survived by his brother, Hubert Barton and sister Linda Hale, loving daughter, Wynn White, devoted sons, Erik Barton and Eliot Barton, and grandchildren, Elias Barton and Hannah Barton.
Though he has left this world, his spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Graveside services were held at West View Cemetery Friday, Mar. 21. In lieu of flowers, please make any and all donations to Potter’s Hand Bible Church in Apex, N.C.
The Barton family is in the care of the Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford.
