On Tuesday, April 21, people in the state of Virginia, are going to vote concerning changing the voting districts in Virginia. Citizens who vote “yes” want to change districts so the Democratic Party will gain a majority of the voting districts in the state.
Voters who are supporting a “no” vote say they are not going to support gerrymandering here in the state of Virginia. They say it’s not the way to run a government and not a way to represent the citizens of the state.
I agree, gerrymandering is terrible; it should not be allowed. But unfortunately, many states are divided that way. It is wrong, but we have a president who supports, and even encourages, this manor of electing members of Congress.
If some states (example – Texas) with a large voting base supports gerrymandering, it will have a negative influence on how a state or the federal government operate if more states follow that method of electing candidates.
Today, the country has a president who desires complete control of everything that the country is involved in, without restriction by members of Congress. So, he is trying to stack the deck with a majority of Republicans. Republicans like Ninth District Morgan Griffith and others will say nothing and let Trump do what he wants. That’s not right.
Virginia is trying to stop that by gerrymandering to keep the playing field level. I am not staying that’s right, but sometimes things need to be done to prevent a bad situation from getting worse.
There is one good part to about this early election. I recently saw that almost 7,000 people in Montgomery County have voted early. On an election in the middle of April, that is outstanding. It shows that citizens realize the situation. Being involved is so much better than being a Monday morning quarterback.
