Virginia Tech wrestling’s Bryce Andonian will compete in the 2021 United World Wrestling’s Junior World Championships this summer after winning the title at the 2021 UWW Junior Nationals Sunday afternoon.
Andonian won both his matches Sunday in the best-two-out-of-three final to earn first place at 70 kilograms and qualify for the Junior World team, which will compete at the Junior World Championships in Ufa, Russia from August 16-22.
The sophomore from Kirtland, Ohio, is Virginia Tech’s fourth Junior World Team member in program history, following the most recent member Mekhi Lewis, who won gold at the 2018 Junior World Championships in Slovakia. Joey Dance (2012) and Sean Gray (1999) round out the list of Tech’s Junior World Team members.
VT’s Clayton Ulrey was also in action Sunday at the Junior Nationals, as he went 1-1 to earn fifth place at 74 kilograms. The freshman was trailing in the fifth-place match before he pulled off the pin with just over a minute remaining.
Incoming Hokie Cooper Flynn went 3-1 Sunday after a 2-1 Saturday to earn fourth place at the Junior Nationals at 57 kilograms.
