A steadfast dedication to preventing intoxicated driving and enforcing intoxicated driving laws on the Blacksburg campus has earned one Virginia Tech police officer top marks at the university and state levels.
Virginia Tech 2019 Police Officer of the Year George Gymer was among the 200 law enforcement officials in the commonwealth recognized for their outstanding educational and enforcement efforts against driving while intoxicated (DWI) by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Virginia earlier this fall.
The annual MADD Virginia Law Enforcement Awards recognize Virginia law enforcement members for their outstanding commitment and critical role in ending drunk driving, helping fight drugged driving, supporting DWI victims, and preventing underage drinking.
Since joining the Virginia Tech Police Department in 2018, Gymer has been deeply engaged in fostering a culture of safety on the Blacksburg campus, with a focus on preventing intoxicated driving.
Gymer has obtained training in a multitude of law enforcement topics, including intoxicated driving prevention, field sobriety testing, and general law enforcement instruction, among others.
He conducts ongoing training for the department on topics like DWI enforcement, traffic stop safety, and court testimony. He is also highly active in MADD’s efforts on campus.
“Preventing intoxicated driving is imperative to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our campus community. I am proud to receive this recognition and will continue to share the knowledge and training I have gained with my Virginia Tech Police Department colleagues,” said Gymer.
