Left to right: Dana Jackson of Fairlawn, VA, US Navy, Ret. (1973-2000); Terry Howlett, visiting from Tyler, TX, US Air Force, Ret. (197301998); David Howlett, visiting from Raleigh, NC, Virginia Army National Guard (1966-1972) replace  the tattered flag at Radford’s historic Central Cemetery on 7th Street.

Terry and David Howlett were visiting their mother on 6th Street in Radford, near the city’s historic Central Cemetery when it was clear that the flag flying over the Central Cemetery needed to be replaced. The brothers worked yesterday afternnon with Dana Jackson, of the American Legion, Harvey-Howe-Carper Post 30, the Radford post that helps replace and retire flags throughout town.

Terry and David’s deceased father, Oshiar, was a veteran too, who served in WW II, spending 26 months as a POW in Germany.  After he retired, he built crafts in his woodworking shop in the 6th Street house.

“When we found the flag pole rope was broken,” Terry wrote recounting the afternoon, he “searched his dad’s shop and found a perfect rope hanging on a nail. It seemed that Oshiar was saying you will need this someday.”
