SUNDAY, JULY 5

First Missionary Baptist Church New River reopens

Bless be the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we will initiating reopening of our church at 10:30 a.m. We ask that our church family and visitors wear masks and practice social distancing during the service. To God be the glory for carrying us during this pandemic, but we are not out of the woods yet; we are in his loving care.

We look forward to seeing you Sunday.

 

MONDAY, JULY 6

YMCA Meals on Main feeding program

The YMCA at VT’s summer feeding program is in its third year, and is expanding to add more sites around Blacksburg and Christiansburg the week of July 6. The program currently serves at Adams Marke (Monday 2-3 p.m.) and Oak Forest Mobile Home (Tuesday 2-3 p.m.) communities, as well as at the YMCA thrift store (Friday 3-6 p.m.). The expansion of the locations will serve the children at Meadowbrook (Wednesdays 2 -3 p.m.) and Blacksburg Estates Mobile Home (Fridays 2- 3 p.m.) communities and Linden Green Apartments (Thursday 2-3 p.m.) in Christiansburg.

At each site, bags with five days’ worth of food are distributed to each child in the family under 18 years old and to each disabled adult under 21. Each day, volunteers help pack the meals, load the truck and serve the meals.

 

THURSDAY, JULY 9

Radford Army Ammunition Plant community meeting

A Facebook Live community meeting to discuss modernization and environmental projects and compliance and corrective actions at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant will be held at 6:30 p.m. Staff members from the U.S. Army and BAE Systems will be on hand to engage with the public. www.facebook.com/RadfordArmyAmmunitionPlant.

Sons of Confederate Veterans meeting

The Sons of Confederate Veterans, Stuart Horse Artillery Camp #1784 will meet at 7 p.m. at Ray’s Restaurant on Rt. 221, north of Floyd. Members of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) are also invited to attend. For further information, call 320-4315 or 239-9864.

Town of Christiansburg Public Art Advisory Board

The Town of Christiansburg Public Art Advisory Board meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 11:30 a.m. in the council chambers of the town hall. The purpose of the advisory board is to advise and make recommendations to the Central Business District Committee regarding the promotion, support and value of public artwork as a means to beautify Christiansburg and promote creative place making within public spaces. The committee is composed of volunteers appointed by the town council. As the advisory board is new, its members are open to residents’ ideas and suggestions for art in public spaces in Christiansburg. To submit an idea, email

Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library open again

All branches of the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library are now open to the public. This includes public computers, Notary services, and first-time passport processing. At this time, the library does not have in-person programming, and does not accept donations or any community room reservations. Checked-out items that would have been due during the closure now have an extended due date of July 6. MFRL is not assessing fines on overdue days between March 16 and September 1. Children’s items are always fine-free.

 

UPCOMING

“More Leaves of the Tree,” a juried exhibition, will be featured in September at the Radford University Art Museum’s off-campus Tyler Gallery. This exhibition invites regional artists to submit works made of leaves, depicting leaves, referring to leaves, or metaphorically about leaves. The renowned environmental sculptor, Patrick Dougherty, will serve as juror; the exhibition’s call for entries can be found at https://ruarboreal.com/tree-news/. The online submission deadline is July 20.
