United Way Stuff the Bus school supply drive begins Sunday

United Way of the New River Valley is kicking off its ninth-annual Stuff the Bus campaign Sunday.


Items Needed

  • Backpacks
  • Lunchboxes
  • Binders
  • Folders with pockets
  • Spiral notebooks
  • Notebook paper
  • Erasable ballpoint pens
  • No. 2 pencils
  • Pink erasers
  • Safety Scissors
  • Washable markers
  • Colored pencils/Crayons
  • Glue sticks
  • Pointed scissors
  • Rulers
  • 3″ X 5″ Index cards
  • Protractors
  • Compass Graph paper
  • Calculators
  • Pens
  • 3 or 5 subject spiral notebooks
  • 5-tab index dividers Highlighters

The Stuff the Bus program is a school supply drive for children in need in the New River Valley.

Locations throughout the community will have drop bins available for donations Sunday through July 31st for community members to contribute to the effort.

All items received in a specific community will be distributed to children in need in that community.

All donations stay local to serve the needs of local children. Distribution of the school supplies this year will be through local partner charities (Montgomery County Emergency Assistance Program, Radford Clothing Ban, and Floyd County Emergency Assistance Program) and given to local school systems to help teachers.

In addition to the month-long collection, a Stuff the Bus Event will take place Saturday, July 28th from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. at the Christiansburg Wal-Mart.

Three school buses from Montgomery County, Radford City and Floyd County will be parked out front and the community is encouraged to come out and “stuff the bus” to send local children back to school prepared to learn.

In 2017, residents across the New River Valley donated over 2,490 items and served 604 children.

Although last year’s Stuff the Bus campaign was a huge success, more children need help. Citizens can the efforts to provide school supplies for children in the community. United Way hopes to reach more children and help more families this year.

Locations to drop supplies at include:

Montgomery County: Walmart in Christiansburg, Kroger on South Main St. in Blacksburg, and Dollar General in Riner.

Radford: Radford Public Library, Taylor Office Supply and Thai This Express.

Floyd County: The Floyd County Tourism & Chamber Of Commerce Office and Slaughter’s Supermarket.
