CHRISTIANSBURG – The Community Health Center of the New River Valley (CHCNRV) has promoted Megan Cornwell Thomas, DO, FAAP, FACOI, FACP, to Chief Medical Officer.
Thomas joined CHCNRV in December 2021 and has served patients in Christiansburg, Dublin and the Pulaski County High School Student Health Center.
In her new role, Thomas will provide clinical leadership for CHCNRV’s medical programs, support practitioners and staff, and help advance the health center’s commitment to accessible, coordinated and high-quality care for people throughout the New River Valley. She will continue caring for patients while assuming her expanded leadership responsibilities.

Her experience caring for both children and adults, along with her gifts as a teacher and mentor, make her exceptionally well suited to lead our medical team as we continue to grow and expand access to care.”
A graduate of the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) in Blacksburg, Thomas completed an internship and residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania. She later served as chief resident in both internal medicine-pediatrics and internal medicine.
Before joining CHCNRV, Thomas served as chair of internal medicine and as an associate professor on the clinical track in internal medicine and pediatrics at VCOM. She also served as core faculty for the Internal Medicine Residency Program at LewisGale Hospital Montgomery, where she supervised residents in the Internal Medicine Continuity Clinic. Throughout her career, she has taught and mentored hundreds of medical students and residents and has received multiple awards for excellence in teaching.
Thomas is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Osteopathic Internists and the American College of Physicians. Her professional experience includes primary care for children and adults, medical education, curriculum development, community outreach and service on state and national medical organizations.
