Tech heads to North Carolina again to take on Wake Forest this afternoon

BLACKSBURG – The No. 19 Virginia Tech football team is back on the field this afternoon, Oct. 24, as they travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., to take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. with the game broadcast on Regional Sports Networks.

The Hokies enter the game after a 40-14 victory over Boston College at Lane Stadiumlast Saturday that featured 350 yards rushing and the return of quarterback Hendon Hooker as the starter. Hooker accounted for four touchdowns and became the first quarterback since Michael Vick in 2000 to rush for over 150 yards. Tech’s defense forced five turnovers in the contest.

The Demon Deacons enter following a 40-23 victory at home versus Virginia.

VT GAME NOTES

  • Virginia Tech travels to Wake Forest for the first time since 2014 after a 40-14 home win vs. BC.
  • Wake Forest registered its first ACC victory of 2020 Saturday with a 40-23 home win vs. UVA (10/17).
  • Last season Tech knocked off No. 22 Wake Forest 36-17 at Lane Stadium.
  • Tech is 5-1 vs. Wake since joining the ACC in 2004.
  • NC State is the only common opponent both teams have faced in 2020. Tech defeated NC State 45-24, while Wake fell 45-42 at NC State.
  • Tech is ranked at No. 19 in the AP Top 25 and No. 20 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
  • Tech ranks fifth among Power Five squads, registering 3.75 sacks per game. Only Pitt (4.83), Clemson (4.60), Oklahoma State (4.0) and WestVirginia (4.0) are better.
  • VT has 15.0 sacks in 2020. DE Amare Barno (a converted LB) leads Tech with 3.5 sacks to rank seventh in the ACC. Barno also has a teamhigh 5.0 TFL.
  • Tech is 20-3 under Fuente when registering 3.0 or more sacks, including a string of 11 straight wins dating back to a 31-14 win at Duke.
  • QB Hendon Hooker owns a 7-2 record as Tech’s starter.
  • Hooker’s 164 net rushing yards vs. BC were the most by a Tech QB since Michael Vick had 210 at Boston College in 2000
  • Hooker accounted for four touchdowns (3 rushing, 1 passing) vs. BC.
  • Among teams playing more than one game, Tech leads the nation, averaging 312.0 ypg and 6.93 yards per carry.

VT registered ZERO games with 300+ net rushing yards from 2011-19. Tech has THREE such games in 2020 with 314 vs. NC State, 324 at Duke and 350 vs. BC (10/17).

  • Tech hasn’t posted three 300-yard rushing games in the same season since doing it three times in 2002.
  • VT is averaging 163.2 rushing yards per game more than it did through its first three games of 2019, when Tech averaged 148.8 yards per game.
  • Tech scored four rushing touchdowns through the first four games of 2019, compared to 15 after four games in 2020.
