The Retired and Senior Volunteers Program of Montgomery County and Radford held its 10th annual fundraising event to benefit Supplies for Seniors last week at the Christiansburg Recreation Center.
Fourteen volunteers began getting ready for guests at 6:30 in the morning making 450 pancakes it was estimated. The event raised $835.
“The pancake breakfast replaced the Walk-A-Thon this year as our committee wanted to try something new. Everyone seemed to enjoy the new event!” Mandy Hayes, coordinator of the RSVP of Montgomery County and Radford program said.
RSVP thanked the Christiansburg Recreation Center, Wades of Christiansburg, Carilion New River Valley Medical Center, and all of the volunteers and community members who helped make the day such a success.
Funds raised support the Supplies for Seniors project that brings personal and household supplies to homebound seniors and veterans.
The wintertime program recognizes that bad weather and high heating bills increases hardship for many seniors forcing them to go without daily personal care essentials like soap and toothbrushes, but also entertaining things like crossword puzzles.
To support the program, monetary and supply donations from the community are welcome throughout the year. Helpful supplies include toilet paper, paper towels, soap, deodorant, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, detergent, tissues, cleaning supplies, trash bags, crossword/word search puzzles, toothbrushes, toothpaste, dish detergent, disinfectant wipes, foil and plastic wrap.
