Successful weekend for area individuals, teams

At least three area high schools have state wrestling champions from weekend competition. In addition, Blacksburg claimed a team title in boys’ Class 4 swimming. The girls’ swim finished third.

Brady Hand was Christiansburg’s lone Class 3 state champ in wrestling at the 138-pound weight class. Mat-mate Jacob Robie would bring a runner up medal home at 144 pounds. 

Staunton River would take the Class 3 team title with 230 points. New Kent was second. 

Radford would finish fourth in the team race of Class 1 with Strasburg first and Grayson County second.

Radford’s Taven Williams brings home a state championship medal at 157 pounds, and Dawson finished second.

Over in the Class 4 wrestling event in Norfolk, Braden Henderson gave Blacksburg a state championship. 

In the pool, the Blacksburg boys finished with 284 points, slipping by second place Jefferson Forest by nine points. 

Blacksburg’s lone state champion was Theo Villanueva who took the 1-meter title. Sam Rielly would finish with three second places, and Soren Anderson also brought home a runner up spot. 

On the girls’ side of the pool, Blacksburg would finish with 299 points behind first place Monacan and Jamestown. 

Peyton Sigtryggsson would win the 1-meter diving event. 

Both boys and girls team from Radford would finish in second place of the Class 1/2 swimming event. Radford tallied 161 points with Glenvar taking the team title with 238 points. While the Lady Bobcats rallied for 299 points to finish in second place behind state champ Bruton. 

Elsewhere, the Auburn Eagles track and field teams made a clean sweep winning both the Girls and Boys Regional 2C Championships.

The Auburn boys’ basketball team is headed back to the state quarterfinals after winning the Mt. Empire District regular season and tournament title. This past weekend, they added the second straight Region C championship.
