The Radford Bobcats won their season opener against Eastern Montgomery 8-6 on Saturday.
A single by Raeleigh Mills gave the Radford Varsity Bobcats the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the third. In the top of the fourth, East Mont regained the lead, 4-3, on a Macie Akers double. Radford regained the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs on three hits to take the lead, 8-4. The biggest blow in the inning was a double by Abie Slate that drove in two.
Radford amassed 10 hits in the game. Mills, Burton, Kaydence Rollins and Sienna Carter each collecting two hits and Ariel Sutphin, Mills and Slate each driving in two runs. Radford Varsity Bobcats ran wild on the base paths, piling up nine stolen bases for the game.
Quinn Burton earned the win for Radford Varsity Bobcats allowing only six hits over seven innings while striking out eight.
Auburn baseball 3-0
Auburn, who has won three straight to open the spring season, picked up a district 11-1 win over Galax (0-2, 0-1) in five innings.
Six different players collected two hits for the Eagles and drove in runs. Mitchell Hale had four RBI’s and Talan Mower and Matthew Altizer each had two. Graham Alley scored three runs on the day.
Jared Lavergne pitched three innings of no hit baseball to pick up the win while picking up five strikeouts. Hale also threw a scoreless inning with three strikeouts.
Blacksburg boys pick up win
Pee Wee Distler scored two second half goals for Blacksburg and Goalkeeper Nathan Pratt had five saves for the Bruins in last week’s 2-1 win over William Fleming.
Karol Naredo Solabac scored for the Colonels with three minutes and 30 seconds left in the match. Goalkeeper Luis Ortiz Fuentes had seven saves for Fleming.
Blacksburg is 2-0 and William Fleming 0-2.
Blacksburg girls shutout Radford
On Thursday, the Blacksburg High School girls’ soccer team defeated Radford 9-0 on a windy night at Bill Brown Stadium.
Piper Berger and Erin Bishop lead the charge with Berger scoring three goals, and Bishop adding two goals. Also scoring was Tea Bissell, Bella Garza, Ginny Crawford, and Elayna Weatherspoon. Erin Bishop, Abby Whaley, Ginny Crawford, Hadley Haugh, Addison McSorley, added assists.
Blacksburg improves to 2-0 on the season as Radford drops to 1-1.
Auburn boys, girls pick up wins
Both the Auburn girls and boys soccer teams picked up wins this past week. The girls’ squad downed Galax 6-1 with two goals by freshman Kaycie Smith.
One goal was scored each by sophomore Alyson Funk, sophomore Ella Handy, junior Brooklyn Mikowicz and sophomore Jillian Tucker.
The boys also picked up a shutout 2-0 over Galax.
Junior Jared Bradley scored twice in the second half. Assists were from junior Carter St. Clair and junior Jude Miear. Junior goalkeeper Bryce Brunk kept his first shutout ever.
