Josh Gholston, a defensive back and former Blacksburg Bruin, is entering the transfer portal after spending two seasons in a Virginia Tech uniform.

The Valparaiso transfer only appeared in one game this season. He was honored on Senior Night and is the fifth walk-on to enter the transfer portal.

Hokies hockey to play outdoors

The Virginia Tech Men’s Club Ice Hockey team will play outdoors for the first time in program history on Jan. 4 at 7 p.m., against the North Carolina Tar Heels at Truist Field in Charlotte.

The Hokie team’s 38th season is also historic for its 15-1-1 record, ranking them seventh in the country in the American Collegiate Hockey Association.

The team has the number one league scorer in the nation, Gavin Peduzzi, and teammate Kameron Khazai is among the top five. Head Coach Joey Mullen picked up his 200th career win last month and is the league record holder in head coaching wins.

PR wins Dudley

Virginia Tech defensive end Antwaun Powell-Ryland has been honored by the Richmond Touchdown Club with the 2024 Dudley Award presented to the best FBS player in the Commonwealth of Virginia. He was also named the Defensive Lineman of the Year in the state.
Powell-Ryland (6-3, 252) is the first Hokie to win the Dudley since David Wilson in 2011. He garnered 13 of the 14 first-place votes to claim the honor. APR tallied 16 sacks on the season and was second in the ACC with 19 tackles for a loss, the most at Virginia Tech since 2002. He also tied for the ACC lead with three fumble recoveries and was named an All-ACC First Team selection.

Hokie world champion

Virginia Tech’s Carles Coll Marti has been crowned a World Champion at the 2024 World Aquatics Swimming Championships with his first-place finish in the 200m breast (2:01.55).

Marti’s winning time of 2:01.55 is also a new Spanish National Record – his fourth new National Record of the week. The Catalonia, Spain, native pulled away on the final 25m and clocked a 15.87 over the final stretch to claim the 200 breast title. It is the first medal for Spain in 10 years at the World Aquatics Championships.

He will go down as one of the best Virginia Tech swimmers in program history. He owns both Hokie program records in the 100 breast (50.95) and 200 breast 1:49.69). He garnered First Team All-American honors this year with his third-place finish in the 200 breast at the NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships.

The Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds will play at Bristol Motor Speedway on August 2, 2025, in what will be the first Major League Baseball game in Tennessee, ever. History will be made at The Last Great Colosseum, and tickets are now on sale.

Ticket prices for the MLB Speedway Classic start at just $50 (plus sales tax & fees). To purchase tickets or seek more information, go to speedwayclassictickethelp@mlb.com.

Goforth to Cards

Blacksburg alum Ethan Goforth has been a minor league instructor for the past three years with the Pittsburgh Pirates. This week, he announced he is joining the St. Louis Cardinals as a minor league catching coordinator.

Previously, he had an outstanding career as a catcher at Carson Newman College and played in the Appalachian League with the Bristol Pirates.

While at Blacksburg High School, he hit .437 and was a two-time team most valuable player and first team all-River Ridge District. In his final season at Carson Newman was named to second-team All-Southeast Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association, hitting for a .376 batting average, 11 homers, 42 RBIs, 70 runs scored and 15 stolen bases.
