Beginner kayaking
The Christiansburg Recreation Department is offering a beginning to kayaking class on Tuesday, September 26 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. The class is for ages 12 and up and will provide the basic skills and safety techniques, paddling terminology, basic paddle strokes, kayaking safety and trip planning.
All equipment will be provided with the class at Claytor Lake. The fee is $15. For more information, call 382-2349.
Prof new Fisheries head
Steve McMullin, associate professor emeritus of human dimensions of fisheries and wildlife in Virginia Tech’s College of Natural Resources and Environment, has been named president of the American Fisheries Society.
With more than 8,000 members, the American Fisheries Society is the world’s oldest and largest organization dedicated to strengthening the fisheries profession, advancing fisheries science, and conserving fisheries resources.
Great day for hike
Join others in a hike to the Hanging Rock Observatory on Wednesday, September 20. The activity is being hosted by the Christiansburg Recreation Department and costs $10 for town residents and $20 for non-residents.
The Hanging Rock Observatory has been a monitoring point for hawk, eagle, falcon and osprey migration along the birds’ eastern route. For more information, call 382-2349.
Turk leads JMU
Junior Katie Turk of Blacksburg fired a career-low 1-under 71 in the second round of the William & Mary Invitational on Sunday, as the James Madison women’s golf team closed the opening day of competition in seventh place at the par-72, 6,122-yard Kingsmill Resort River Course.
Turk used four birdies, including one on each of her final two holes, to card her new career best, which was tied for the second-lowest round in the field through the first 36 holes. Her afternoon round, 11 strokes better than her first 18, moved her into sole possession of 27th in the 67-player event at 9-over 153.
As a team, the Dukes shaved 14 strokes off their morning round in the afternoon, firing a 12-over 300 to move up a spot into seventh at the 11-team event at 614, just five strokes behind sixth-place Xavier. Penn State holds the team lead after two rounds at 14-over 590.
Big South player of week
Radford University’s Maddie Palmer was named the Offensive Big South Player of the Week, announced on Monday afternoon. Palmer, who picked up a record six player of the week awards last year, recorded 48 kills and 32 digs – both team-highs – along with a .337 attack percentage and 4.36 kills per set at the Carolina Classic.
Highlander freshman of week
Already with two Big South weekly honors on the season, Radford men’s soccer added its third award of the season as Max Edwards was named Big South Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon.
Edwards entered last week’s match against Coastal Carolina in the 23rd minute, only to play the rest of the match. The Woodbridge native made his presence known in the 32nd minute after sending a cross into the box for a Sivert Daehlie header goal, giving Radford a 1-0 lead.
