Bluefield loaded with local talent

Bluefield College takes to the field this weekend with a big Montgomery County/Radford connection. Head Coach Dewey Lusk is a Christiansburg native, and four local players are on the roster this season.

They include: Jordan Shockley (Fr., DB, 5-7, 160) from Blacksburg, Andrew McFee (Sr., OL, 6-2, 295) from Blacksburg, and Alan Bowen (r-Fr., 6-0, 182) and Michael Hinkley (Sr., OL, 6-3, 230), both from Auburn.

Eight Mile Bridge Challenge

The Christiansburg Recreation Department has announced a date for its annual Eight Mile Bridge Challenge for September 16 at 8 .m. Participants will take a shuttle bus to the Blacksburg Library and then walk along the Huckleberry Trail to the Christiansburg Recreation Center.

Entry is free, but the event is limited to the first 70 individuals. The deadline is September 4. For more information, call 382-2349.

RU meet the coach night

Radford University Athletics is excited to be hosting “Meet the Coaches Night” Presented by National Bank on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at the newly remodeled Farmhouse Restaurant in Christiansburg.

The meet and greet with the coaches and athletics administration will run from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Radford University President Brian O. Hemphill and Director of Athletics Robert Lineburg offer remarks. Complimentary appetizers and a cash bar will be available. Please RSVP by calling the Office of Alumni Relations at 831-6236.

E&H picked ODAC winner

With five of the seven first-place votes, the Emory & Henry College Football Team is this year’s favorite to win the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, ODAC officials announced Tuesday. The league’s seven football coaches are the voters in the poll.

Last season’s conference champion, Randolph-Macon College, is second with a first-place nod while Washington and Lee University is third. Hampden-Sydney College sits in fourth, garnering the final first-place vote while Bridgewater College is fifth. Guilford College and Shenandoah University round out the group.

Emory & Henry will kick off the 2017 campaign on Saturday, September 2, hosting Ferrum College at 1 p.m.

Rock climbing course

The Blacksburg Recreation Department is sponsoring an introductory rock climbing course on Saturday, August 26 for ages 11 and up. Trained climbing guides will provide climbers with the proper gear, instruction and transportation, giving individuals the ability to set their own pace.

Pre-registration will end Wednesday, August 23. The price is $25 for Blacksburg residents and $35 for non-residents. For more information, call 443-1100.

Hokie Half Marathon

The Fifth Annual Hokie Half Marathon and 5K will be Sunday, September 17. Races are held throughout the streets and paved trails of Blacksburg, beginning at 7 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third place male and female runners with $500 going to the overall winners.

In addition, Hokie medals will be given to the top three male and female finishers in 14 age divisions.
