Rhode Island added to schedule

Virginia Tech Athletics confirmed on Monday that the Hokies will host the University of Rhode Island at Lane Stadium/Worsham Field on Oct. 12, 2019. The game will mark the second-ever meeting between the two schools. Tech won the initial meeting in Blacksburg by a 34-7 margin on Oct. 11, 1980

For the second consecutive year, the Hokies will host seven games at Lane Stadium/Worsham Field with the season ticket price remaining at $400. In 2019, that every season ticket will also include a $25 concessions voucher per season ticket as a value-added benefit.

Spicer wins Carolinas

Virginia Tech women’s golfer Jessica Spicer won the 10th Carolinas Young Amateur Championship on Thursday at Pinewild Country Club (Magnolia) in Pinehurst, N.C.

The junior from Bahama, North Carolina, shot a 2-under 70 in the rain-shortened event to claim the title. The final round was scheduled for Friday, Jan. 4, but was cancelled due to a forecast for torrential rain in the Southern Pines area.

Spicer got off to a hot start making three birdies in her first four holes. With two more birdies and only three bogeys in the round, Spicer won the championship by one shot over College of Charleston sophomore, Jodee Tindal of Rock Hill, S.C. Spicer’s twin sister and Hokie teammate, Sarah, tied for sixth in the championship with a 75.

Jones player of week

After leading the Radford men’s basketball team to a back-to-back wins, redshirt sophomore guard Carlik Jones has been named Big South Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
The Cincinnati, Ohio native got the week started with a stellar performance on the road at Maryland, posting 20 points to go along with eight assists and six rebounds. Then after a good showing in limited minutes against Mars Hill, he tied his career high with 24 points against Longwood while supplying seven rebounds and six assists.
He shot 51.4-percent (19-37) across the three games and recorded one steal in each contest as well. He showed an incredible ability to get to the charity stripe in Radford’s conference-opening win over the Lancers, setting career highs in free throws made (13) and free throws attempted (15).
Through 13 games played, Jones is averaging 33.2 minutes, 15.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.6 steals per game to demonstrate a clear improvement in every way over his breakout freshman season.
