All-ACC Academic Team

Redshirt senior Jared Haught and redshirt junior Zack Zavatsky have been named to the All-ACC Academic Team, the conference office announced Thursday.

Haught, a mechanical engineering major, was named to the all-academic squad for the fourth time in his career. Zavatsky, a packaging systems and design major, was selected to the team for the third time.

Also, on Thursday, the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) awarded both Haught and Zavatsky All-Academic accolades.

To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a minimum 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a minimum 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.

H2Okies All-ACC Academic

The Virginia Tech swimming and diving program has seven representatives on the 2018 All-ACC Academic Team as announced Thursday by the conference office.

Seniors Maggie Gruber and Adriana Grabski, junior Ashlynn Peters and freshman Joelle Vereb claimed honors on the women’s side while seniors Harrison Pierce and Ian Ho along with junior Ben Schiesl were named to the men’s team. This marks Gruber’s fourth time on the academic team while Schiesl takes home his third nod. This is the second time on the team for both Peters and Ho.

Landers Bobblehead

The Appalachian League today announced plans for a Lee Landers

bobblehead giveaway during the 2018 season. Nine teams in the Advanced-Rookie league will

participate in the promotion to honor League President Lee Landers, who will retire following the 2018

season.

Landers was named the 2017 King of Baseball, and his bobblehead likeness will feature the crown and

robe presented to him at the Baseball Winter Meetings in Orlando, Fla. in December.

“I am humbled and honored that the League would think of doing this on my behalf,” said Landers, who

has served as Appalachian League President since 1996 as part of a career in professional baseball that

began in 1959.

Bluefield, Bristol, Burlington, Danville, Elizabethton, Greeneville, Johnson City, Kingsport, and Pulaski will

all participate in the promotion, hosting the bobblehead giveaways on dates coinciding with Landers’

trips to each ballpark during the 2018 season. The Pulaski night will be August 24, and bobbleheads will go to the first 300 fans.

Worthy second team VaSID

Jayda Worthy added one more honor to her already accomplished career in a Radford uniform, earning a Virginia Sports Information Director All-State (VaSID) second team nod, the association announced on Thursday.
Worthy becomes the third straight Highlander to be named to a VaSID All-State team under head coach Mike McGuire. The all-state honor is the first of Worthy’s career.
Worthy was named Big South Defensive Player of the Year after serving as the vocal leader of Radford’s defense that finished fourth nationally in scoring defense, holding opponents to 52.9 points per game.

Polite Jr. second team

Making yet another addition to his trophy case, junior forward Ed Polite Jr. was named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State Second Team, the organization announced Friday morning.

Polite Jr. did it all for the Highlanders during the 2017-18 campaign, leading the team in points (13.3), rebounds (7.9), steals (1.9) and minutes played per game (32.1). He also set career-highs for field goals made (166), three-point field goals made (22) and free throw percentage (72.7 percent) to help Radford win the Big South Championship for the third time and an NCAA Tournament game for the first time in program history.

After a stellar regular season, Polite Jr. became the 15th player in Radford history to be named to the All-Big South First Team and the first since Javonte Green earned the distinction in 2014-15. He also earned a place on the All-Big South Tournament team.
