Hicks on watch list

To continue its momentum into the 50th celebration season of the Citizen Naismith Trophy, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced 50 women’s college basketball players to watch for the Citizen Naismith Player of the Year Trophy and Virginia Tech guard Chanette Hicks is on the list.

Hicks, a junior from Norfolk, Virginia, is averaging 12.4 points, 6.7 assists and 3.7 steals on the season for the Hokies.

Jones named Big South freshman of the week

For the second time this season, redshirt freshman guard Carlik Jones has been named Big South Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon.

Jones came close to recording his first career double-double when he tallied eight points and eight rebounds in Radford’s nail-biting, 74-77, loss at Elon on Wednesday night. He added two assists and was a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw line as well.

Through five games, Jones is averaging a team-leading 12.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game while shooting 54.1-percent from the floor and 52.9-percent from beyond the arc.

Edmunds named Butkus finalist

Junior linebacker Tremaine Edmunds is one of five finalists for the Butkus Award, which is awarded annually to the nation’s top linebacker. He is seeking to become the first Virginia Tech player to earn this prestigious honor which will be announced in early December.

Edmunds furthered his case as the top linebacker in America with a dominant defensive performance in a 10-0 win at Virginia. He led the Hokies with nine tackles, 3.0 TFL and 2.0 as the Hokies limited the Cavaliers to five rushing yards in the game. The junior sensation received ACC Linebacker of the Week honors for the second time in his career for his efforts and was named an All-ACC first team selection on Monday. Pro Football Focus College also graded him at 92.2 against Virginia, the highest mark of any ACC defender last weekend.

Edmunds turned in his second straight 100-tackle season for the Hokies and currently leads the squad 102 tackles (55 solo), a figure that ranks eighth among all ACC players.
