Concord finishes fifth
The Concord University Athletic Department finished fifth in the 2018-19 Mountain East Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
The University of Charleston won the Commissioner’s Cup with an all-sports score of .871. Notre Dame, Fairmont State and West Liberty were in front of the Mountain Lions with CU having an all-sports score of .594, edging out Shepherd (.592) for a spot in the top five.
The standings are compiled utilizing an “all-sports rating.” This rating is determined by a formula that awards points to a school for its regular season finish equal to the number of teams per sport sponsored by the MEC, and then divided by the number of sports offered by the institution.
CU offers 16 sports and finished with 94 points out of a possible 158 in the rankings.
Magarity to Turkey
Former Virginia Tech women’s basketball great Regan Magarity has signed a professional contract with Hatay Buyuksehir Belediyespor of the Turkish Women’s Basketball Super League, the highest level in the country. The club plays in the city of Hatay at the Antakya Sport Hall.
Magarity goes down in history as one of the best to put on a maroon and orange jersey for the Hokies after completing a career that includes owning the career rebounding record, finishing third all-time in scoring and blocks and tied for 10th in 3-point field goals made.
The first woman in Virginia Tech history to record 1,000 rebounds, Magarity corralled an ACC record 1,299 during her career and the Sweden native owns the three highest single-season rebound tallies in program history, leading the conference in that category with 12.8 per game this past season in 2018-19.
Fan appreciation day
For the sixth consecutive year, the Virginia Tech football program will host Fan Appreciation Day, which will begin at 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, August 11 at the Beamer-Lawson Indoor Practice Facility. Admission and parking are both free. The event allows fans to get autographs from their favorite student-athletes and select coaches until its conclusion at 4 p.m. Entertainment is expected to be provided for young children.
As is customary, Hokie Kids’ Club members will be admitted to the event 15 minutes in advance of the general public at 2:30 p.m. Membership to the Hokies Kids’ Club costs only $35 and comes with a variety of perks, including early entrance to Fan Appreciation Day, one complimentary ticket per membership to Tech’s home game vs. Furman on Sept. 14, a free t-shirt and a membership lanyard.
The Hokies will report to fall camp on Thursday, August 1 and will conduct their annual Media Day that afternoon. Further details will be supplied to members of the media once finalized. Tech will open practice on Friday, Aug. 2. A complete media schedule will be released to the media in July.
Hokies wrestling schedule
Virginia Tech wrestling is set to face a slew of teams that placed in the top 25 at the NCAA Championships last season as the Hokies have unveiled their opponents for the 2019-20 season.
The home schedule is highlighted by duals against Missouri, Northwestern, West Virginia and North Carolina. On the road, Tech will most notably face Ohio State, Cornell and NC State. Exact dates and times for all matches will be announced at a later date.
