Francis “Fran” Woodrow Shelton, 78, of Radford, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2025.

Born in Kingsport, Tennessee and raised in Fairlawn, Fran graduated from Dublin High School and Virginia Tech, then worked as an aerospace engineer. During this time, he married the love of his life, Martha. Making a career shift, Fran earned a master’s degree in education, then taught math for many years, most of which were at Pulaski County High School (PCHS). Fran was an ardent supporter of the PCHS Cougars, for whom he sold the reserved football stadium seats.

Fran was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Radford for over 50 years, during which he sang in the church choir and volunteered alongside his church friends. Fran was devoted to his family; in addition to his many acts of service towards them, he had a wonderful sense of humor and a playful spirit, never hesitating to be silly with his children and grandchildren.

Fran was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse James Shelton, Sr. and Vernie Wolfe Buzard; and his brother, Jesse James Shelton, Jr.

Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Martha Jean Hayley Shelton; children and their spouses, Jeffrey Charles Shelton (Karen Godbey) and Hayley Shelton Arnold (Keith); grandchildren, Ryan and Helen; brother, Tom Shelton; sister, Linda Stapleton; nephew and his family, Jonathan Fisher (Rhonda), Preston, and Liam; and numerous other relatives and special friends.

The family received friends Saturday, Feb. 15, 2025, at the First Baptist Church in Radford. Memorial services followed with Pastor Diana White officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First Baptist Church, 215 3rd Ave, Radford, VA 24141.

The Shelton family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford.
