School calendar set for 2018-19 school year

The calendar for the 2018-19 school year has been set, with an early start for city students.


The Radford City School Board voted on the calendar at its Tuesday meeting, with the first day of the school year scheduled for Wed. Aug. 15.

Other highlights of the calendar include:

Monday, Aug. 13: Open House at all schools

Mon., Sept. 3: Schools closed for Labor Day

Thurs., Nov 1 and Friday, Nov. 2: Schools closed for Parent/ Techer Conferences and teacher work day

Wed. Nov. 21 through Fri. Nov. 23: Schools closed for Thanksgiving

Monday, Dec. 24 – Fri. Jan. 4: Winter Break

Fri. Jan. 11: “Data day,” schools closed for students

Mon. Jan 21: Schools closed for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Mon. Feb. 18: Schools closed for Presidents’ Day

Mon. March 11- Fri. March 15: Schools closed for teacher work days/ spring break

Fri. April 19 and Mon. April 22: Schools closed

Mon. May 27: Schools closed for Memorial Day

Fri. May 31: Last Day of School, two-hour early release

Also at Tuesday’s board meeting, the school board passed a budget amendment to the current fiscal year budget, primarily to accept funds from several grants, including:

Security Grant: $51,392

Virginia Middle School Teacher Corps Grant: $10,000

Title IV: $10,000

Extended School Year Grant: $212,240

Parent Resource Center Grant: $10,000

High School Program Innovation Grant: $50,000

School Capital Project beginning/carryover balance from FY2017: $129,856

The school board’s next scheduled meeting is Tuesday, March 6.
