RADFORD – Alivia Pinnix, a junior in the traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Radford University Carilion (RUC), was recognized earlier this month with a nomination for a DAISY Award – an international honor recognizing skillful and compassionate care provision for patients and families.
Pinnix was completing the final day of her adult health clinical rotation in the medical/surgical unit at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital (CRMH) when she took extra time to ensure a patient felt heard throughout the day and had a safe space to allow a therapeutic conversation. Pinnix also said she made sure the patient was comfortable and properly taken care of for the entire clinical day. As a result, the patient nominated Pinnix for the award.
The Martinsville native was presented with the nomination by CRMH Medical/Surgical unit department manager Tami Mitchell, who is also an adjunct faculty instructor for RUC.
“This nomination means everything to me because it is such a significant accomplishment,” Pinnix said. “I am so honored to receive this recognition, and knowing that the patient felt well cared for makes it even better.”
Stacey Rorie, D.N.P., an assistant professor in the RUC nursing program, said making these kinds of connections with patients during experiential learning experiences is essential for nursing students as they develop compassion and empathy along with their clinical skills.
“As faculty, we teach, model and train extraordinary students like Alivia to provide exemplary care for our patients,” Rorie said. “The nomination stated Alivia went above and beyond to make sure all needs were met and took time out to talk – something busy nurses often don’t have time to do. This nomination shows our students are taking the initiative to connect with patients in addition to providing for their healthcare needs.”
Rorie added that she is very proud of Pinnix and is excited to see where she goes in her career, saying, “she will do amazing things.”
Wendy Downey, D.N.P., interim dean of the Radford University School of Nursing, said the nomination demonstrates Pinnix’s commitment to patient care and outstanding service.
“I told her that she should be incredibly proud of the nurse she is becoming,” Downey said. “I am so proud of the care that Alivia is providing, and she truly represents the best of Radford University School of Nursing.”
Pinnix said she is grateful for the chance to participate in practical clinical experiences like the ones offered through the RUC nursing program because they will help her become a better nurse.
“RUC is known for providing education through hands-on experiences, which are beneficial to bedside nursing,” Pinnix said. “The nursing professors at RUC want the best for each student and put forth effort to help students flourish in the program. I couldn’t imagine a better place to be preparing for my nursing career.”
