Radford High School’s Mattie Flores will continue her track career at Radford University.

This past week, the student-athlete signed a letter of intent in the school’s gymnasium in front of family, friends and teammates.

At RU, Flores will compete in the 400-meter hurdle race, as well as the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 300-meter dash. Her best times were 12.8 sec in the 100 and a 26.8 in my 200. Her season was cut short this year after she suffered a broken collarbone.

She said the decision in choosing RU was an easy one as she has a deep affection for Radford. She moved from San Angelo, Texas her junior year and is glad to stay home.

“Proximity to my mother’s home was also a crucial factor in my decision, as maintaining close ties with my family is paramount to me,” she said. “During my visit to the university’s team, I was embraced by the incredibly kind head coach, Shelly Sayers, and the team members who showed genuine support and kindness, cementing my decision to join RU.”

Radford University Coach Shelli Sayers in entering her fifth year as head coach. Previously, she served as Assistant Coach from the 2015 – 2019 seasons. The team participates in the Big South Conference.

Flores said one of the most memorable moments in her track experience was undoubtedly competing at the state level.

“Racing at such a prestigious event was not only exhilarating but also being part of the incredible team from Radford High School made it even more special,” she said. “The camaraderie and support from my teammates truly enhanced my growth both as an athlete and as a teammate. Running alongside them was truly a highlight of my track journey.”
Both her mother and grandmother both ran track in their careers, while her father was a quarterback in high school. Both brothers, TJ and Daniel, also ran track.
Currently, Flores is undecided on her major at RU but is leaning towards pursuing Dental Hygiene.

“As a result, I’m considering majoring in either chemistry or biology,” she said. “Both fields would provide a strong foundation for my future career path in dental hygiene.”
