Relay For Life, the American Cancer Society’s signature event, is a powerful tribute to survivors, a memorial to those lost, and a rallying call to end cancer. What began in 1985 as one man’s 24-hour walk around a track has evolved into a global movement that brings communities together in the fight against cancer. This year is significant because it marks Relay for Life’s 40th anniversary – celebrating four decades of impact, hope and support for those touched by cancer. We are excited to announce the Relay for Life Montgomery County signature event for 2025 is the Community for a Cure Festival. The event will be held at Blacksburg Middle School on Saturday, June 7, 2025, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Every Relay for Life event is more than just a walk – it’s a deeply emotional and inspirational experience. Teams of friends, families, and co-workers that have raised funds throughout the year come together to unite in the fight against cancer. The Relay for Life event begins with an uplifting opening ceremony where participants come together to celebrate cancer survivors and honor the caregivers who support them.
The most powerful and impactful part of our Relay event is the luminaria ceremony. This tradition honors those who have battled cancer. Hundreds of luminaria bags (paper lanterns), each decorated with names of loved ones, messages, drawings or photos are lined up and luminated with LED lights. As participants walk silently in tribute, the flickering lights represent the enduring spirit of those affected by cancer and hope for brighter days ahead.
In addition to the traditional ceremonies to honor those who have battled cancer, the event also features a variety of fun activities for participants of all ages. Some of the activities include dynamic entertainers providing live music, a variety of unique business vendors, delicious food provided by local food trucks, a silent auction featuring items generously donated by local businesses and friends of Relay, engaging kids activities, and Zumba. Word on the street is that some special guests might just drop by for a surprise visit. There will truly be something for everyone.
Our participants Relay for various reasons, often because cancer has touched their lives in some way, and for some, it is deeply personal. Money raised throughout the year is used for cancer research, to provide programs for patient support such as rides to treatments and personalized information and support. The Relay funds allocated to research have provided new medicines and treatments which have saved lives and prolonged the lives of those right here in our community. Whatever the reason, Relay for Life unites people from all walks of life under a common goal – to one day see a world free of cancer.
Come join us for this unique event that blends fun, community and a heartfelt mission. Luminaria bags or lanterns can be purchased and decorated the night of the event.
