Rakes, Jerry Wayne

Jerry Wayne Rakes, 66, of Christiansburg, passed away on Oct. 13, 2019 after an extended illness. He was the son of the late Thomas J. Rakes and Kathleen Bailey Rakes Kershner.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 22 years, Amy Sue Haymond Rakes.  Also surviving are two daughters, Michelle Rakes and Jerri Lynn Rakes; three granddaughters, Alecia Rakes, Chloe Rakes, and Skylar Meadows all of Beckley, WV; four sisters, Mrs. Dale (Sharon) Harper of Beckley, WV;  Mrs. Greg (Judy) Altice of Dinwiddie, VA; Sheila Rakes of Bland, VA, Mrs. Herman Sturgill (Brenda Johnson) of Beckley, WV; and several nieces and nephews.  A grandson, Gaige Anderson Rakes and a sister, Kathy Sue Miller preceded him in death.

Jerry worked in construction most of his life and later worked for Montgomery County Public Schools.

He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Salem Lodge #2375.  He served as Governor and Pastor Governor.  He was Asst. Secretary and Chief Financial Officer of the Virginia Moose Legion, District 82.  Jerry was also a volunteer at Lewis Gale Hospital Montgomery from 2012-2019.  He had a love for animals and children and loved to make people laugh.

Visitation for family and friends is today, Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2019, from 5-7 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home, with a short service by the Loyal Order of the Moose.  Interment will be in Mountain State Memorial Gardens in Gilman, WV, on Thursday, Oct.17, 2019, at 1 p.m.  Online condolences may be left for the family at www.hornefuneralservice.com.
