Radford’s Charles Branscom

Charles Branscom of Radford has won the Randal J. Kirk Medical Scholarship presented by Blacksburg’s Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM).

The scholarship was created by the Kirk family to be awarded to students from Southwest Virginia with preference given to students who plan to do primary care.

Since VCOM opened its doors for medical students in 2004, the college has graduated more than 3,600 physicians. More than 66% of VCOM graduates are now in residency or practicing in the college’s southern target Appalachian states and Delta regions of the country.

“As part of VCOM’s successful commitment to lessen the shortage of physicians, the college recruits students from, provides training in and returns skillful physicians to provide care in medically underserved areas, especially those in the southern Appalachian region,” said Dixie Tooke-Rawlins, VCOM president and provost. “We are most grateful for the generosity of the Kirk family in creating a scholarship program that encourages many of our students to fulfill the college’s mission of improving the delivery of healthcare throughout Southwest Virginia.”

The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) is a private, 501(c)(3) non-profit osteopathic medical school in Blacksburg with three branch campuses located in Spartanburg, S.C., (VCOM-Carolinas) Auburn, Ala., (VCOM-Auburn) and Monroe, La., (VCOM-Louisiana).
