From the Big band music of the early 1950’s through doo wop in the middle of the decade, Radford Senior Center went back in time with a Sock Hop Social on Thursday, Aug. 31, sponsored by Radford Lion’s Club. The Radford Lion’s Club is best known for fighting blindness, but also volunteer for many different kinds of community projects – including caring for the environment, feeding the hungry and aiding seniors and the disabled.

At the event, Seniors enjoyed some old timey root beer floats, a popcorn station, moon pies and a demonstration of the “Hand Jive” that came to life in 1957.

According to the-history-of-the-hand-jive-and-the-culture-that-surrounds when freelance photographer Ken Russel recorded a group of teenagers hand jiving in the basement of The Cat’s Whisker coffee bar in London.

It is believed that the hand jive came to life because it was too crowded to get up and dance in the tiny basement. Participants were taken back to their day as they posed for their pictures on route 66. They enjoyed door prizes along with the lucky guess game and name bingo.
