Radford City Dispatchers recently implemented a new system known as “Emergency Medical Dispatch” (EMD).
This system, already in use at over 3,500 emergency call centers worldwide, is designed to bridge the critical moments between the initiation of a 911 call and the arrival of emergency responders. Through EMD, 911 dispatchers will ask specific questions and provide instructions tailored to the nature of each medical emergency, ranging from non-urgent to life-threatening situations.
Emergency Medical Dispatch is a life-saving system that enables 911 telecommunicators to quickly assess each patient and determine who needs immediate pre-arrival instructions. While rescue units are en route, dispatchers will use APCO International software-based protocol to guide them in asking relevant questions and providing essential instructions for a variety of medical emergencies. These include CPR, choking, overdoses, allergic reactions, seizures, severe bleeding, and injuries. The specific questions and instructions will vary depending on the type of medical emergency.
Public cooperation and patience with 911 telecommunicators is crucial for delivering the best possible care until emergency responders arrive. By following the provided instructions, callers can significantly improve the outcome for the patient.
