RADFORD – The Radford City Council is expected to take its final vote in favor of increasing the city’s tobacco tax rate to 40 cents per pack
The current rate of 15 cents per pack has remained the same since the city first levied a tobacco tax more than a decade ago. The Virginia General Assembly recently passed a measure to allow localities to levy up to a 40-cent per pack tax. The first vote on the ordinance to raise the tax rate, which was taken at the council’s May 10 meeting, was unanimous in favor of doing so.
Monday’s meeting is set for 7 p.m. in the city council chambers, located at 10 Robertson St. in Radford. The agenda is as follows:

Request for Proposals: East Main Street sidewalk improvements
The City of Radford is seeking expressions of interest from consulting engineering firms who wish to be considered to provide professional engineering services for The City of Radford East Main Street sidewalk improvements, transportation alternatives project. The project is funded through a Federal Highway Administration (FWHA) and Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) grant.
This project shall be developed utilizing VDOT policies and FHWA guidelines. In addition, the project design shall meet or exceed current American Association of State Highway and Transportation Official (AASHTO) standards. The estimated cost of the proposed project is approximately $477,000. Design and construction of the project is anticipated to take approximately three and a half years.
