RADFORD – The Radford Chamber of Commerce is reminding the public that it wants residents’ plastic.

The chamber is leading a community recycling effort in hopes of turning plastic bags into a bench, and it is halfway to its goal.

Businesses serve as collection points to drop off plastic bags, from grocery bags to bread bags, as well as bubble wrap and other plastic items. Those items are delivered to Trex, a company that makes benches from recycled plastic.

“With donating items to Trex. They turn 500 pounds of recycled plastics into sustainable benches for communities,” said Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Ciara Harris. “We want to have a bench placed in the new west end triangle plaza.”

Plastic recyclables can be dropped off at the Radford Chamber office, Ameriprise Financial-Radford, Ballpark Signs or Eleven West.

“We have dropped off 250 pounds of plastics so far, and need to get to 500 pounds by our goal date of Wednesday, Feb. 17,” said Harris. “We hope to place a sustainable bench in the triangle plaza for all to enjoy. Thanks to everyone who continues to be safe and contributes to our community program efforts.”
