The George Washington and Jefferson National Forests are selling firewood permits by mail, email or phone while the forest service offices are closed due to Covid-19 concerns.

A firewood permit allows the bearer to gather down and dead wood on national forest lands. Wood gathered under this permit is for personal use only and cannot be sold to others.

Permits cost $20.00 and are good for one year from the date of issue. The permit allows the bearer to gather six cords of wood from the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. A cord of wood measures 4-feet x 4-feet x 8-feet and features a volume of 128 cubic feet.

To purchase a firewood permit by mail, download the necessary form at https://www.fs.usda.gov/main/gwj/passes-permits/forestproducts and then send it to the nearest district office.

To purchase a permit by phone, contact the nearest ranger district office.

For Montgomery County, the nearest district office is the Eastern Divide Ranger District5 office at 110 Southpark Dr., Blacksburg Va. 34060, 540-552-4641. The district includes Bland, Botetourt, Craig, Giles, Monroe (WV), Montgomery, Pulaski, Roanoke, Smyth, Tazewell and Wythe counties.
