New grant program covers full cost of certain NRCC degrees for eligible students

DUBLIN – A new grant program available in Virginia could cover the full cost of tuition and fees for people interested in pursuing certain careers.

According to New River Community College, “G3 assistance at New River Community College is now available to eligible students seeking certifications and degrees that will lead to an in-demand job.”

“The G3 program covers tuition and fees for individuals who qualify for state financial aid, allowing students to gain the skills they need for a good career in their community without worrying about costs,” the announcement reads. “G3 assistance is available for select programs in five of Virginia’s most in-demand industries, including early childhood education, health care, information technology, public safety, and skilled trades.”

“This new program will not only provide educational opportunities and access to training and skills that will ensure our students are able to find good jobs, but it will also remove the financial barrier and help families,” said NRCC President Pat Huber.

Applicants for G3 must meet certain financial qualifications. For example, a student’s household income (for a family of four) must be less than $106,000 or a single adult making less than $51,000. Income thresholds vary as the household number increases.

Once a student qualifies, G3 assistance requires a level of academic performance to stay eligible. For full-time students who also receive the maximum Pell Grant, additional benefits are designed to help offset the cost of living so they can continue to take care of their family while going through a program.

Typically, the cost of attendance for a full-time student at NRCC is $4,696.50 per year (15 credits/semester). The G3 program provides last-dollar funds that, with other financial aid, could bring that cost down to $0.

Students who are interested in learning more about G3 assistance at NRCC and what programs of study they can pursue can visit www.nr.edu/g3.
