Christiansburg High School has a new volleyball coach. Amanda McCoy, who has been coaching volleyball for almost two decades, has been appointed to the position.

Previously, she was the head coach at five high schools in Virginia, including a five-year stint at her alma mater, William Byrd, and a six-year span at Rockbridge County High School.

Most recently Amanda served as the head coach at Rockbridge County High School from 2016-2022.  While under her tenure, the school made three VHSL State Tournament appearances (the first in school history in 2017), back-to-back Region C champions in 2017 and 2018 as well as 5 Valley District Tournament Champions and five regular season Valley District Champions in a row.

She was named the 2018, 2019 and 2021 Valley District Coach of the Year, and 2017 and 2018 Region C Coach of the Year. McCoy’s players have been recognized at the district, region and state levels with 14 VHSL All State players, two Region C Players of the Year and four Valley District Players of the Year.

McCoy also spent three seasons of coaching at the DIII level including as an assistant for Southern Virginia University Women’s Volleyball and most recently served as head coach for the 2024 and 2025 seasons at Mary Baldwin University.

She currently serves as the Executive Director for Performance Volleyball Club in Roanoke.

As a player, she graduated from William Byrd High School and was a member of the 2000 State Championship team, the only in school history.

She is a 2006 graduate of Roanoke College, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Human Performance. Previously, McCoy also taught Health and PE and Strength and Conditioning at the high school level.

In the immediate future, McCoy said she is looking forward to getting in the gym with the players and learning more about them and their goals for the upcoming season at both the JV and varsity level.

“It is important to me that my programs are just that, programs. This means that JV and varsity function together, and also I hope to continue to foster a strong relationship with the middle school program for Christiansburg through support,” she said.

McCoy believes firmly in a holistic athlete.

“This means who they are on and off the court are important. They need to be great role models in their school and community while understanding that they are more than just an athlete. I want our players to be known for being great teammates, leaders in the Christiansburg area and just positive examples of student athletes for CHS,” she concluded.
