BLACKSBURG – Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, through the generosity of its parishioners, is offering several scholarships in 2023 to area high school and college students.

Luther Memorial Lutheran Church has a strong history of choral excellence and a deep appreciation for quality music. The former choir director of 30 years, Thomas Greenwood Wilson, left a generous endowment for the music program and we hope to create meaningful connections with music students in the area with the establishment of a voice scholarship for college students in our area. This year for the first time, Luther Memorial is offering the Thomas Greenwood Wilson Memorial Voice Scholarship. Music students at Virginia Tech or Radford University, who maintain a GPA of 3.25 and can commit to sing with the LMLC choir and/or perform solos for 10 Sundays and/or special choral events or worship services per academic semester, are eligible to apply for this scholarship of $750 per semester by lending their voice and gifts to the choir and congregation. The deadline to submit applications is April 15, 2023, and scholarship award announcement will be made on May 15, 2023, for the fall semester 2023.

In addition, through the Luther Memorial Education Endowment Scholarship, the church is also offering two $500 scholarships; both are for high school seniors entering college, university, or technical school in the fall of 2023, or for any student already enrolled in a higher education program. The first scholarship is for any student who is a member of an ELCA Lutheran congregation; the second scholarship is for any BIPOC (Black, Indigenous Person of Color) student in the Blacksburg community. The application process begins March 1st; applications are due on May 1st and will be reviewed in May and awarded in June, payable directly to the student’s learning institution.

“We are so blessed to be able to offer these scholarships through the generosity of our parishioners,” said Reverend Monica Weber, pastor at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church.  “Scholarships help provide more students with the opportunity to earn an education they may not otherwise be able to and allow them more time to concentrate and focus on their studies. Without scholarships, many students who could most benefit from higher education are finding it harder and harder to afford. We encourage all students in the Blacksburg community to apply.”
