The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety, has announced Carilion New River Valley Medical Center, LewisGale Hospital – Montgomery and LewisGale Hospital – Pulaski have all earned an “A” grade.

Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, and the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.

“Quality and safe patient care are the beacons that guide everything we do,” said Steve Arner, president and chief executive officer at Carilion. “These Hospital Safety Grades are the result of collaboration at the highest level among teams across our organization and a laser focus on giving our patients the best possible outcomes.”

“Patient safety is a top priority for our hospital teams,” said Elizabeth Mikula, HCA Healthcare Capital Division vice president of quality. “Our hospitals regularly measure and report hundreds of quality and patient safety data points, directly related to patient outcomes, across multiple patient populations. We recognize the importance of measuring quality and safety in patient care and are proud of our dedicated physicians, nurses, and colleagues who provide our patients with exceptional care each day.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
