Frederick “Fred” Thomas Linkous, 84, of Blacksburg, passed away at home on Friday Dec. 5, 2025. Fred was a loving husband of 64 years to Garnett.
Fred was a lifetime public servant and never met a stranger. He was a retired Virginia Tech police officer, Life member of Blacksburg Rescue Squad and Life member and past chief of Blacksburg Fire Department, where he served for 54 years. He gave his time to the Executive Committee of the Virginia State Fire Chiefs Association and the Southwest Virginia Firefighters Association. He was active in the firehouse culture, encouraging young firefighters and inspiring others until his passing. He was an active member of The Church on Main where he had been part of the church family for over 20 years. He knew everyone when he went out and would never forget a face.
He is survived by his wife, Garnett Linkous; daughter Pam Linkous-Polan (Greg); granddaughters Emily Polan-Harper (Andrew) and Sarah Polan; and sister Betty Belle Coleman. He was preceded in death by his son Michael Linkous.
He leaves behind a legacy of giving, training, education and a love of his community that will last forever.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2025, at 1 p.m. followed by the service at 2 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg with Rev. Dr. Tommy McDearis officiating. Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery.
