Letter: Vote Tim Shepherd for Montgomery County Sheriff

Dear editor,

Vote Tim Shepherd for Montgomery County Sheriff

On June 20, the citizens of Montgomery County will make a decision by electing the Republican nominee for the upcoming special election for sheriff. When voters are tasked with making this decision, they should ask themselves: What experience should a sheriff have? What qualifies you to lead an entire department? And who am I going to trust to ensure that I, my family, my friends, and neighbors are safe? Because the position of sheriff is not simply a title given to you from an appointment, but it’s a title earned from the voters who elect and hire that candidate to trust their safety with. A knowledgeable voter is a powerful voter, so in this election, voters deserve to know the facts.

The position of sheriff requires experience. It requires someone knowledgeable in managing personnel, supervising deputies, training future leaders, creating effective policy, and making difficult decisions under pressure. Tim Shepherd possesses those capabilities, and he is ready to lead on day one.

Tim Shepherd brings nearly 30 years of law enforcement experience into this race, more than any candidate this year, Republican or Democrat. He has served 13 years in a supervisory role as a Sergeant and a Lieutenant. He is proudly the only military veteran, serving in the United States Marine Corps and deploying to Operation Desert Storm as a non-commissioned officer, a testament to his ability to lead under times of stress and pressure. He is a nationally certified EMT with years of medical experience. He is the most educated candidate in the race, with an associate’s degree in police science, a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration, and will have a master’s degree in public administration this fall. He has been a law enforcement instructor for more than 25 years, training officers. Tim knows the issues. Tim knows the solutions. Tim is, by far, the most qualified candidate in this race. When asked about his qualifications, he stated, “I have been preparing myself to be the best candidate and sheriff for the citizens of this county. I want to be as educated, qualified, and ready to take on the issues facing this county.”

Voters should choose carefully and evaluate the experience, qualifications, and background in leadership, and how long each candidate has been in those positions. Tim Shepherd has demonstrated a clear record of service that makes him unique compared to every other candidate in this race.

The Republican Primary will be held on June 20th at the Montgomery County Government Center (755 Roanoke St, Christiansburg); voting will take place from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. On June 20, I urge everyone to support Tim Shepherd for Sheriff.
