Larrick to lead Hokie spirit squad

The Virginia Tech Athletics Department Wednesday announced the hiring of Josh Larrick as head coach for the spirit squad programs. Larrick was promoted to the position after having spent the last seven years working as an assistant spirit coach for the Hokies. He will oversee the day-to-day operation of the cheerleading, dance team (HighTechs) and mascot program.

“I am very thankful and excited to take over the spirit programs at Virginia Tech,” Larrick said. “I can’t wait to continue my career at my alma mater and find new and better ways to support all of our athletic teams.”

During his time as assistant coach, his duties with the cheer team included proper stunting, baskets, tumbling and pyramid technique. He has been instrumental in recruiting males to the cheer program and in helping choreograph game–day and nationals’ performances.

Prior to working as an assistant coach, Larrick was a member of the cheer program from 2008 – 2013 and graduated from Virginia Tech in 2013 with a degree in material science and engineering.

During his time as a student-athlete, he helped the team to its highest place in program history, a fourth-place finish at the 2012 National Cheerleaders Association Nationals. He served as captain of the team in 2012-13 and was named Cheerleading Strength & Conditioning Athlete of the Year in 2011-12. Larrick is from Winchester and resides in Christiansburg.
