Men pause from their work threshing wheat with a steam thresher in this ca.1900 photograph. While the steam engine drove the threshing machine, oxen and horses were used to pull the wagons to haul the crop. The large pile to the right was the straw; the grain would have been placed in sacks or barrels. (This image from the D. D. Lester Collection and many more are available from the Montgomery Museum of Art & History.)
