Basil Bowman Gordon, age 88, of Wytheville, passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2017. He was the son of the late Alexander and Mary Hoback Gordon.


Basil was a United States Army Veteran, past Superintendent of Sunday Schools at St. Luke Lutheran Church, a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church and attended All Nations of God.

He was past President of the Wytheville Lions Club, past President and lifetime member of the Wytheville Rescue Squad, a member of Habitat for Humanity and the Agape Food Pantry.

He was presented the Community Builders Award from Wytheville Masonic Lodge and the Community Service Award from Wytheville Wythe/Bland Chamber of Commerce.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Halsey Gordon; sisters, Gertie Gordon, Donnie Pearl Watkins and Virginia Smith; brothers, Walter Gordon and Daniel Gordon; and grandson, Nathan Gordon.

He is survived by his sons, Danny (Becky) Gordon of Wytheville, Tommy Gordon of Wytheville and Marty Gordon of Blacksburg; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Gladys Alvis and Frank Alvis of Hillsville; grandchildren, Amanda Bentley and Brandon Bentley of Wytheville, Caralyn Gordon of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Michael Eugenio and Rachelle Eugenio of Norfolk and Yvonne Gordon of Wytheville; great-grandchildren J.B. and Jaime of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Pastor Chad Dunford with interment to follow in St. Luke Lutheran Church Cemetery.

The American Legion Post #9 will conduct military graveside rites. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 p.m. until service time or at the home of Danny and Becky Gordon, 1235 W. Spiller St., Wytheville VA 24382.
