When I was younger, I was always looking forward to getting older. Old people have it made. They don’t have to go to work. No tight schedules; don’t need to follow someone else’s rules. The best part, you have a check coming in every month, all you need to do is walk to the mailbox and there it is and then deposit it in the bank. In many cases the check goes right to the bank you can’t beat that.
Of course, money is money, you have it or you don’t. But when you’re old you learn to get by with what you got. If the amount is slim life can get complicated. So why buy hot dogs for $3.95 a pack when one for $2.50 will be just as good.
There are other things about getting old besides money, though money has a hold on first place. That is where the lottery comes into play. You always hear about people doing a scratch-off one minute and the next they find they are set for life. The word is Las Vegas here I come, or I’m going on vacation, set-up a cruise. Putting some money into the bank or a solid investment is not a bad idea. People need to be prepared to live into their eighties, which is not unusual today
The majority of people work their pension as best they can and life is good. If life is good what more can one expect; I know, win the lottery.
Two other things that have a big part in the lives of old people are health and companionship. Staying healthy is so important and difficult. I guess the word is exercise. You can’t beat it. Doctors, coaches, everyone
says you need to do something and you need to do it on a regular basis like five days a week. Walking is the best. You can walk any time, any place, any speed and the best part is almost all of us can do it.
Exercise is just a good way to help you stay young away from the doctor. It is not the total answer, but it’s a good start.
Another thing is companionship. The statistics of people living alone and not communicating with someone on a regular basis is staggering. Living by yourself can be very difficult. Who is going to take care of you when a major problem comes up?
On the internet there are numerous companies advertising people to date, they even have women from Ukraine. Of course, they all look 30 and they don’t know what fat looks like.
I will be 82 in September; I don’t see much of a chance for me. All the ads feature woman under 60. I guess companies think of old guys as just being old and not worth the trouble. It does hurt my feelings, but I guess I will get over it.
